Workplace Flexibility Challenge
Campaign

Work/Flex Starter Kit
Members of The White House Council on Women and Girls
highlighted Corporate Voices' Workplace Flexibility Challenge Campaign when they
announced the release of their "Work/Flex Starter Kit" on Tuesday at Vice
President Biden's Middle Class Task Force Event.
Continuing the discussion started in March
at the White House Forum on Workplace Flexibility, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Senior Advisor to the President Valerie
Jarrett discussed the Administration's ongoing commitment on Tuesday
to improving work-family balance for all Americans through workplace
flexibility. President
Obama and Administration officials identified workplace flexibility as a
strategy essential to supporting working families and strengthening our nation's
economy at the Forum in March. Corporate Voices was then asked by the White
House to start a campaign to challenge the business community to broaden
awareness for the positive business and employee benefits workplace flexibility
offers.
At Tuesday's event, the Council on Women and Girls
launched its Work-Flex Event Starter
Kit to encourage
businesses, employees, and universities to use the Event Starter Kit to start a
conversation in their own communities about how innovative workplace flexibility
policies can help empower families to meet the dual demands of work and
family. The White House's Work-Flex Event Starter Kit is available here.
Corporate Voices would like to congratulate Cisco Systems, Inc., Ernst & Young, and LifeCare
for joining our workplace flexibility campaign and committing their
support for Corporate Voices' 2010
Statement of Support for Expanding Workplace Flexibility.
They join
Accenture, AOL, Baxter International Inc., Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Workplace Options, Sodexo, Knowledge Universe, KPMG LLP, Childrens' Creative Learning Centers, McGladreySM, and a
growing number of businesses that recognize the value of workplace
flexibility.
Corporate Voices also applauds the efforts of our

work-life initiative:

Is it Time to Stop Tracking Vacation Leave?
Recruiting and retaining the best and brightest employees is a challenge many businesses face. A recent article in HR Specialist examines a new and radically flexible approach to monitoring employees' vacation and personal leave that has been adopted by companies such as IBM and Netflix.
According to the article, employers are rethinking their traditional time-off policies in an effort to meet employees' needs for flexibility, while aiming to boost productivity and retention at the same time. While plenty of employers have instituted innovative paid-time-off banks in lieu of separate vacation, sick, and personal leave plans, these newer plans go further, doing away with the concept of tracking leave time altogether.
This new approach to tracking vacation leave does have its upsides and downsides.
The Upside: Reduced HR and supervisor administrative burdens; better morale and productivity.
The Downside: Pressure on employees to always be on call; a greater temptation for employees to exploit the system. Also, some employment law attorneys warn that such informal attitudes could put employers at risk in certain situations.
